‘The Simpsons Movie’ Sequel Gets an Interesting New Release Date

Earlier this year, Simpsons fans got the news they had been waiting decades for when Disney announced that Homer and his family were gearing up for another big-screen adventure.

Nearly two decades after The Simpsons movie first hit theaters, the studio announced that The Simpsons were returning to cinemas for the highly anticipated sequel.

Now, we have an update on the film’s release.

The Film Will Now Be Released Over Labor Day Weekend

When Disney initially announced that The Simpsons 2 was in the works, the release date was set for July 23, 2027.

As an untitled Marvel project had originally been scheduled for that release slot, it appeared that Disney was changing things up and going with the iconic Fox franchise instead.

Today, however, the studio announced that The Simpsons 2 was changing release dates and would now hit theaters on September 3, 2027, which is Labor Day Weekend.

A Strange Decision

While The Simpsons 2 will face less competition over Labor Day Weekend than it would in July, the decision to shift the film’s release date is odd.

Labor Day has traditionally been one of the slower holiday weekends of the year.

In fact, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings managed to gross more than $43 million over the late summer holiday.

Clearly, Disney believes that The Simpsons audience, which tends to skew older and thus will be less affected by the start of the school year, will still turn out.

It will be fascinating to see if the studio’s gamble pays off.
