Disney’s Global Streaming Strategy Will Include More Comedies and Plenty of Local Content
Disney+ is a global brand and home to some of the biggest shows on streaming. However, the service has made a concerted effort of late to tailor the service to individual local markets.
While fans around the world flock to Disney’s streaming service to watch series such as The Mandalorian, Loki, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians, they have also increasingly turned to Disney+ for local content.

This has been an intentional strategy by Bob Iger and his team, and one that they feel is fundamental to Disney’s streaming success.

“The third pillar of growth is the investment in content, particularly outside the United States, where we know that we need to invest more in local content, and we’ve already started that process,” Iger told investors earlier this year.
Disney Continues to Partner With Other Studios
Over the past 11 months, Disney+ has launched 100 series across more than 20 territories.

Additionally, the streamer has reached deals with ITV in the UK, Atresmedia in Spain, ZDF Studios in Germany, and Nordisk in the Nordics to expand its local content catalog.

Needless to say, this has been an unprecedented time of growth for Disney+.
Eric Schreier Looks Ahead
Against this backdrop, Eric Schreier, President of Disney TV Studios and Global Original Television Strategy at Disney Entertainment, took the stage at Content London to provide a look ahead.

Discussing Disney’s strategy in the United Kingdom, Schreier was quick to tease that more comedies are on the way.
“We think the world can use some comedy right now,” he said (via Deadline).

“[There are] A number of dramas in development in the UK – limited and not limited – and comedy, which has not been a trend as of late.”
A Sound Strategy
Discussing Disney’s recent agreements with other studios, Schreier pointed to Hulu in the United States as the model. The streaming service typically platforms ABC and Fox content the day after they premiere on linear television.

“We see that as a very productive way to offer content to subscribers,” he said.
In the end, Disney’s goal is not necessarily to be the “exclusive” home of local content. Instead, they want to be a hub where fans can find all their favorite shows.
In an ever-changing media environment, Iger, Schreier, and their teams have shown flexibility and a willingness to pivot that have served Disney well.

For now, however, the focus will remain on local content. Even if Disney is not always the studio producing that work.
