Shawn Levy Reveals WHO Will Score ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ (And Its Not John Williams)
While Star Wars fans are still eagerly awaiting the arrival of The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will hit theaters next year, they are also looking ahead to Sean Levy’s Starfighter.
Scheduled to be released in 2027, Starfighter will be set five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker and will see Ryan Gosling join the galaxy far, far away.

“The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters,” Gosling teased. “It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”
A Star-Studded Cast
Over the past several months, we have continued to learn more about the creative team behind Starfighter. In addition to Gosling, the film will star Flynn Gray, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Mia Goth, and Amy Adams.

“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on ‘Star Wars: Starfighter,’” says filmmaker Shawn Levy.

“From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”
John Williams Will Not Score the Film
During a recent interview on the On Film…with Kevin McCarthy podcast, Shawn Levy revealed that John Williams will not score his Star Wars film.

On one hand, the news is not surprising, as Williams has already ceded his scoring duties on The Mandalorian & Grogu to Ludwig Goransson.
On the other hand, Williams has previously scored every Star Wars film, including all nine entries in the Skywalker Saga.

The question then is, who will score Starfighter?
Enter Thomas Newman
According to Levy, 15-time Oscar nominee Thomas Newman will score his Star Wars film.

“I know, bro. I don’t know if that’s public, so now it is. Yeah, I think we’re breaking news here,” Levy explained.
“You don’t understand. If you ask me to name my favorite scores, five of the top 10 are Tom Newman: ‘Shawshank,’ ‘Road to Perdition,’ ‘Nemo,’ ‘American Beauty.’ The guy is a maestro.”

For Levy, the goal for Starfighter’s score was to create a soundtrack inspired by John Williams, not simply remixes of his previous work.
“And I was thinking about this movie and what I need the music to be, because it wants to be sort of classically inspired. But no, it’s not gonna be remixes of Williams cues. It may be inspired by some of that, but I knew that I needed a big-hearted movie score from a composer, who like John Williams, doesn’t shy away from themes,” he continued.

That desire eventually led him to Newman.
“So, I called up Tom Newman. You don’t understand, I’m a fan,” added Levy. “And I said, ‘Hey, it’s Shawn Levy. Would you ever consider—?’ And he said, ‘Send me the script, and describe your vision.’ And I did both those things, and it was yes. And I’m so stoked. … I’m so excited about it.”
