Fueled By Success in China, ‘Zootopia 2’ Delivers a Record-Breaking Global Opening
After a disappointing eleven months at the box office, Walt Disney Studios returned to theaters this Thanksgiving with the highly anticipated Zootopia 2.
Reuniting audiences with Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps, the film follows the dynamic duo as they track the “twisting trail of a mysterious reptile who arrives in Zootopia and turns the mammal metropolis upside down.”

“To crack the case, Judy and Nick must go undercover to unexpected new parts of town. Where their growing partnership is tested like never before,” the film’s synopsis explains.
A Hot Start and Domestic Success
Hitting theaters the day before Thanksgiving, Zootopia 2 got off to a hot start with a $39 million opening day. That was the second-best opening on a Wednesday before Thanksgiving ever.
Eventually, Zootopia 2 capitalized on its strong start and sparkling critical reviews, grossing $156.4 million in domestic theaters over its first five days.

That number is significantly higher than the $125 million the film was projected to gross this week, and easily topped the $140 million that analysts expected after the film’s strong debut.
An International Juggernaut
While Zootopia 2 had an exceedingly strong domestic opening frame, that is not where the story is.
Internationally, the film grossed $400 million over its first five days in theaters.

That number gives the latest Disney animated blockbuster the 4th-highest international opening of all time, the best international opening for Walt Disney Animation ever, and the highest international animated opening of all time.

Additionally, the film has bested China’s Ne Zha 2 for the highest global animated opening ever and trails only Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home for the best global opening of all time.
A Blockbuster in China
Speaking of China, Zootopia 2 had the second-best non-local filming opening ever, behind only Avengers: Endgame, earning $272 million in its first five days of release.

As we have written about extensively, success at the Chinese box office has been elusive for Hollywood since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Zootopia 2 not only found success but also shattered that barrier.

This week in particular, Disney has a lot to be thankful for.
