It is impossible to tell the story of The Walt Disney Company, or even American popular culture, without mentioning Mickey Mouse, Disney’s brightest star.

Today Is Mickey and Minnie’s Birthday
On this date in 1928, Steamboat Willie premiered at the Colony Theatre in New York City, introducing the world to Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

For 97 years, Mickey and Minnie have carved out a place in popular consciousness. The success of the Mickey Mouse cartoons enabled Walt Disney to create the Silly Symphonies, feature-length animated films, and eventually Disneyland.

Even as the popularity of the Mickey Mouse shorts waned in the 1940s, the iconic animated character remained synonymous with Disney.

In the 1950s, Mickey soared back to popularity with the debut of the Mickey Mouse Club on television and the opening of Disneyland.
Along the way, Minnie was right there beside him.
An American Icon
