‘Predator: Badlands’ Shatters Expectations en Route to $40 Million Domestic Debut
After the disappointing box office run of TRON: Ares, Disney returned to theaters with 20th Century Studios’ Predator: Badlands.
Starring Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, Badlands transports audiences to a remote planet where a young predator, banished from his clan, befriends an unlikely ally and embarks on a treacherous journey in search of the ultimate adversary.

As the first Predator feature film released since Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox, expectations for the movie were high.

After all, Disney has previously breathed new life into other 20th Century franchises, including Alien and Planet of the Apes.
‘Predator: Badlands’ Expectations
Heading into the weekend, Predator: Badlands was tracking towards a $25 million domestic debut and $60 million worldwide opening.

Those figures would have fallen short of Alien: Romulus’s $42 million domestic opening, but were in line with the franchise’s previous installment, The Predator.
A Strong Debut
In a surprising, but welcome, development, Predator: Badlands crushed expectations last weekend and delivered a $40 million domestic debut.

The film now boasts the biggest opening in franchise history, topping 2004’s Alien vs. Predator, which grossed $38 million.
In addition to its strong domestic results, Predator: Badlands earned another $40 million at the international box office, bringing its global gross to $80 million.

Given the film’s $105 million budget, Disney needed Badlands to start strong. Thankfully, the film delivered.
With strong critical reviews and a glistening A- CinemaScore, Predator: Badlands should be able to enjoy an extended box office run.
