Can ‘Zootopia 2’ Topple ‘Moana 2’s Historic Thanksgiving Debut?

In less than one month, audiences will finally have the opportunity to reunite with Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde when Zootopia 2 scurries into theaters.

The highly anticipated sequel to 2016’s Zootopia will see the dynamic duo follow the “twisting trail of a mysterious reptile who arrives in Zootopia and turns the mammal metropolis upside down.”

“To crack the case, Judy and Nick must go undercover to unexpected new parts of town, where their growing partnership is tested like never before,” the film’s synopsis explains.

Early Tracking Has Been Strong

The last time we checked in, BoxOfficeTheory had released their six-week tracking for Zootopia 2, estimating that the film would gross between $115 million and $130 million over its three-day opening.

Now, we have another data point to consider.

Will ‘Zootopia 2’ Topple ‘Moana 2’?

A new report from BoxOfficePro has tempered expectations for Zootopia 2, prognosticating that the film will gross between $95 and $110 million over its three-day debut and between $140 and $160 million over its first five days in theaters.

While those numbers are down slightly from earlier projections, they would still constitute a massive opening.

As we sit here today, it seems unlikely that Zootopia 2 will be able to match the historic Thanksgiving opening of Moana 2 last year.

Nevertheless, the film’s tracking points towards another animated hit for Disney.

The Film Could Gain Momentum

With just over four weeks to go until the film hits theaters, Zootopia 2 may continue to gain momentum and deliver an even stronger debut.
