‘TRON: Ares’ Is Tracking Towards a $45-$50 Million Domestic Debut
In just two days, audiences will once again journey into the Grid as TRON: Ares speeds into theaters.
Unlike the first two films in the franchise, Ares will not see humanity entering the digital realm. This time around, artificial intelligence is making its way into the real world.

“Mankind encounters AI beings for the first time when a highly sophisticated programme, Ares, leaves the digital world for a dangerous mission in the real world,” the film’s synopsis reads.
‘TRON: Ares’ Is Tracking Towards a Solid Debut
According to a new report from Variety, TRON: Ares is now tracking towards a debut of between $45 and $50 million.

Such an opening would give Ares the biggest first weekend in TRON history and would see the film beating out early estimates.
Overseas, Ares is heading towards an opening of $40 to $45 million, which would give the TRON film a global debut of between $85 and $95 million.

The question now is what constitutes box office success for Ares?
What Does a “Win” Look Like?
Generally speaking, TRON has never been a hyper-commercial franchise. The first TRON film grossed $50 million against a $17 million budget. 2010’s TRON: Legacy managed to deliver a $400 million global cume against a $170 million budget.
As TRON: Ares boasts a $180 million budget, Disney would likely be fine with a similar total.

Should the film end its box office run around the $400 million mark, it would put the movie in the realm of profitability. More importantly, however, it would keep TRON in the cultural zeitgeist and breathe new life into the franchise.
If the third TRON film can deliver a $50 million debut, then the studio should be ecstatic.
The Road Ahead
To turn a profit, TRON: Ares will have to not only retain its audience but also attract those outside the franchise’s dedicated fan base.

So far, critical reviews are unlikely to be strong enough to achieve this goal.
In short, Ares needs strong audience scores and word of mouth to give it some momentum.
