A Disney Patent Lawsuit Could Have Widespread Ramifications
Over the past several months, The Walt Disney Company has been embroiled in litigation that could have lasting repercussions for Hollywood as a whole.
Here at MickeyBlog, we have been primarily focused on Disney’s lawsuit against AI image generator Midjourney and their legal battle over Steamboat Willie.

Now, however, I would like to turn your attention to Delaware, where an interesting case is about to commence.
A Patent Lawsuit
As part of a legal battle between Disney Enterprises and InterDigital Inc. over video-compression patents, the United States Department of Justice has filed a new statement.

In the suit, Disney argues that InterDigital has deployed a “patent-ambush strategy” against it by unfairly leveraging patents to block innovation.

InterDigital has responded by filing a motion to dismiss or a motion to stay while the matter is resolved.
The Department of Justice Has Weighed In
In the filing, the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division warned Judge Maryellen Noreika, essentially stating that a company’s patent doesn’t automatically confer monopoly power. Additionally, the company is not breaking antitrust laws by enforcing the patent.

According to the Department of Justice, industry standards can help lower costs for companies and consumers, while also encouraging innovation.
Nevertheless, when companies collaborate, they can also block competition.

Essentially, the DOJ argued that setting technology standards and protecting patents can be good for innovation, but the judicial system must ensure that these tools are not unfairly used to suppress competition.
A Big Decision Will Follow
Following the Department of Justice’s guidance, Judge Noreika will have to make a significant decision in the Disney patent suit. The result could have ramifications for years to come.
