The Early Reviews For ‘TRON: Ares’ Are In – Here Is What Critics Are Saying

In just three days, audiences will finally have the opportunity to return to the Grid as TRON: Ares zips into theaters.

As opposed to the first two installments in the TRON franchise, Ares will not see humankind entering the digital world. Instead, AI is coming to us.

“Mankind encounters AI beings for the first time when a highly sophisticated programme, Ares, leaves the digital world for a dangerous mission in the real world,” the film’s synopsis reads.

With just days to go until TRON: Ares hits theaters, the first reviews for the film are rolling in.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the third TRON film currently holds a 57% approval rating, which would give the film the second-best score in the franchise’s history.

Reading over the reviews, the film’s aesthetics, visuals, and soundtrack are being universally praised.

“’TRON: Ares’ is spectacularly designed, swiftly paced, thoughtfully written, and directed within an inch of its neon-hued life,” Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com said in a 4/4 review.

“Every aspect is absolute nonsense. But you know what? Nonsense can be fun in the right context,” Matt Singer of ScrenCrush stated.

The Bad

Other critics, however, have panned the film’s “thin” story and Leto’s performance.

“For all the creativity on display in Tron: Ares, it’s in service of a story with scant signs of life,” Tim Greierson of Screen International wrote.

The Bottom Line

In the end, the early reviews for TRON: Ares are likely neither good enough to expand the film’s audience, nor poor enough to drive them away.

The big question now is what will audiences think?
