Disney Springs is celebrating 50 years of magic, and we are going to take a closer look at the evolution of Disney Springs.
A Half-Century of Magic

Fifty years ago, Disney Springs looked very different from what it does today. What began in 1975 as the Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village with just 37 shops and restaurants has transformed into one of Walt Disney World’s most visited destinations.
This year not only marks the 50th anniversary of the district, but also the 10th anniversary of its transformation into Disney Springs.
Today, the location boasts over 150 shops, restaurants, and experiences attracting millions of visitors each year.
Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village: The Beginning

Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village opened in 1975 and was designed to serve the planned residential community on Disney property. Guests could browse unique shops such as Captain’s Tower, Bath Parlour, and Gourmet Pantry. Arribas Brothers was one of the original shops and is still enchanting guests today.
The name itself reflects Disney history and was inspired by Buena Vista Street in Burbank, California, where Walt Disney Studios is located.
From Village to Marketplace

By 1977, the area was renamed Walt Disney World Village and expanded as it began to attract vacationers.
One of its most memorable additions was the Empress Lilly riverboat, named after Walt’s wife, Lillian. That same boat is now home to Paddlefish, keeping a piece of Disney history alive.
In 1989, the property evolved again as Disney Village Marketplace, introducing favorites like Rainforest Café and LEGO.
Pleasure Island also opened during this time, offering nightlife, comedy clubs, and entertainment for adults. It also included the opening of World of Disney, the largest Disney store in the world.
The Downtown Disney Era

In 1997, the entire area was rebranded as Downtown Disney, combining Marketplace and Pleasure Island with a new district: the West Side.
This era brought big changes, including DisneyQuest, Cirque du Soleil’s La Nouba, and the AMC Theaters. The Aerophile balloon arrived, and the area evolved into more than just shopping. It became a place to dine, play, and experience something new outside the theme parks.

The most dramatic transformation came in 2015 when Downtown Disney officially became Disney Springs. Inspired by Florida’s coastal towns and built around the story of a natural springs community, Disney Springs introduced four distinct neighborhoods: Town Center, The Landing, Marketplace, and West Side.
The expansion doubled the number of venues and created opportunities for local businesses to shine alongside global brands. Today, you’ll find everything from Florida-based favorites like Gideon’s Bakehouse and The Polite Pig to signature dining like Morimoto Asia and STK Steakhouse.
