‘Zootopia 2’ Will Put Nick and Judy’s Relationship to the Test Like Never Before
With less than two months to go until the film hits theaters, the buzz surrounding Zootopia 2 is continuing to get louder.
Earlier today, Disney released a new trailer for the upcoming animated film, which not only shed more light on Nick and Judy’s next adventure but also teased a new original song.

Shortly after the new trailer debuted, Jared Bush, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, discussed what Zootopia 2 had in store for fans.
The Relationship at the Center of the Film
Previewing the highly anticipated sequel, Bush highlighted the developing relationship between Nick and Judy.

“In the first film, they were partners for about 48 hours, so there’s a lot more they need to learn about each other,” he said.

“They made it over that first hurdle, but now they have to figure out if they’re really designed to function as a team in the long run. Judy and Nick are very different, and in this film, they’re thrust into a very different scenario that challenges them.”
The Same Characters
While Zootopia 2 will feature a more mature Nick and Judy, the film’s creators did not want the characters to lose what made them so special.

“We didn’t want Nick to lose all his sharpness and snark. We wanted Judy to keep her idealism. They’re smart characters, so they’re constantly able to one-up each other. People loved their dynamic in Zootopia, so we wanted to continue that,” director Byron Howard explained.

Interestingly, Bush also revealed that Zootopia 2 will pick up directly after the first film, further exploring the complex dynamics between the film’s two main characters.
A New Challenge
While the first Zootopia focused on the divide between predator and prey, this time around, Nick and Judy get swept up into a mystery after meeting Gary De’Snake, the first snake to be seen in Zootopia for 100 years.

“Reptiles weren’t in the first film,” Bush said. “We wanted to use the contrast of mammals and reptiles to highlight that Judy and Nick are very different… How can they all coexist?”
Now official Zootopia police officers, Nick and Judy will find themselves on the run after a sting goes wrong. The situation will put their friendship to the test.

“Judy and Nick developed such a good rapport in the first movie, but now their partnership is going to be tested in an exciting and surprising way,” said head of story Carrie Liao. “Every relationship evolves. What does it really mean to be partners? There’s a big mystery at the center of Zootopia 2. But at its core, this story is about Judy and Nick’s relationship.”
Zootopia 2 is set to hit theaters on November 26.
