Sony Sets Up An Animation Showdown Between ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ and Pixar’s ‘Gatto’
After dominating Father’s Day weekend for years, Pixar is going to have to defend its home turf.
Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third installment in the beloved animated series, has shifted release dates and will now open on June 18, 2027.

That just so happens to be the date that Pixar’s Gatto will hit theaters.
Pixar Has Traditionally Owned June
Since Cars debuted in theaters in 2006, Pixar has consistently dominated the box office in June, typically kicking off the summer season with a bang.

Over the past two decades, Ratatouille, WALL-E, Toy Story 3, Brave, Inside Out, Finding Dory, and Incredibles 2 have been just some of the iconic Pixar films to debut in June.

Since the pandemic, however, things have been a bit rockier for Pixar.
The Studio Is No Longer Untouchable
While last year’s Inside Out 2 was a creative and commercial triumph, eventually becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, recent Pixar films, including Lightyear, Elemental, and Elio, have largely struggled (though Elemental would subsequently become a sleeper hit).

As Pixar struggles to launch original films, it is clear that Hollywood no longer fears the animation giant as it once did.
What Will Pixar Do?
By moving Beyond the Spider-Verse to Father’s Day 2027, Sony has put the ball in Disney’s court.

Will the studio leave Gatto where it is and risk getting trounced? Or will Pixar call for a strategic retreat and reschedule the film for a new date?

For now, we will have to wait and see.
