UPDATE: Construction Underway at Rivers of America in Magic Kingdom
There is a lot of change happening right now at Walt Disney World! We have spotted everything from construction walls up in the Norway Pavilion, continued lobby renovations at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, a refreshed Walt Disney World Train Station, and more.
And that is just within the last month.

Another big transformation is happening in Magic Kingdom, and we have photos and updates on the latest look. Let’s check out the most recent updates at Rivers of America.
Latest Updates
An important part of Magic Kingdom history closed earlier this summer. Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America were permanently closed due to area expansion. Piston Peak, a new Cars-themed area, is coming soon, and Disney is getting ready.
Rivers of America started its transformation on July 7th, the very next day after closing. Simple brown construction walls went up overnight, blocking some of the view.

A few weeks later, in early August, the rivers were partially drained.

By the end of August, the river was completely drained, exposing the ground and some of the ride track.

Now, more construction is happening each day.

Additional tarps, scaffolding, and construction walls are erected.

The tarps are blocking the guests’ view, as well as the construction that will be happening behind the scenes.

This area will soon be completely blocked off, so guests can’t see the demolition of Rivers of America.

Here is another look:

The rivers are completely drained, and you can see the additional scaffolding from this viewpoint. This may be one of the last times we can view the area before it’s completely blocked off in the next few weeks.

These changes are making way for Piston Peak National Park, the Cars-themed version of a national park and Disney’s largest expansion to date.
The new land is inspired by the Rocky Mountain area and will complement both Frontierland and Liberty Square. Guests will experience new attractions, new offerings, and an immersive wilderness experience. We can’t wait!
