Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Universal File Another Consequential AI Lawsuit
Just months after The Walt Disney Company and Universal Studios filed their landmark copyright suit against Midjourney, an AI image generator with millions of users, the duo is going on the offensive against another AI company.
Yesterday, the two companies joined Warner Bros. Discovery to file a copyright lawsuit against China’s MiniMax, arguing that its image and video-generating service Hailuo AI was developed using their intellectual property.

The new suit, which was filed in the district court of California, claims MiniMax not only used copyrighted material to train its AI, but also marketed its service as a “Hollywood Studios in your pocket.”
The Plaintiff’s Claims
Like Midjourney, Hailuo allows users to generate and download images and videos of copyrighted characters.

According to the studios, MiniMax also disregarded U.S. copyright laws and failed to take action when the studios asked that measures be put in place to avoid infringement.

“A responsible approach to AI innovation is critical, and today’s lawsuit against MiniMax again demonstrates our shared commitment to holding accountable those who violate copyright laws, wherever they may be based,” the companies said in a statement.
Why Now?
The MiniMax lawsuit comes as the company is transitioning to becoming a publicly traded entity. According to Yahoo Finance, the Chinese AI company is targeting a valuation of more than $4 billion.

Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros. are asking that the judge halt the infringement, provide restitution, and cease operation until the proper copyright protections have been put in place.
Like the Midjourney lawsuit, the latest legal battle will have lasting implications on the future of AI.
