Lourdes Ambriz, Spanish Voice of Belle, Dies at 64
Sad Disney news today. The worlds of opera and Disney are both mourning the loss of Lourdes Ambriz, the acclaimed Mexican soprano who brought Belle’s singing voice to life.
The talented singer, who appeared in the 1991 Spanish version of Beauty and the Beast, passed away at the age of 64.

The National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL) confirmed her death on August 28th. The organization has expressed its condolences to her family, colleagues, and the arts community.
Ambriz was an iconic figure in Mexican opera, with a career spanning over four decades. Her repertoire included everything from opera and oratorio to chamber, Renaissance, and contemporary music.

She performed on stages throughout Europe, America, Africa, and the Middle East, earning recognition for her artistry and versatility.

Ambriz’s achievements included collaborations and solo performances with the Dallas and San Francisco orchestras, Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, Venezuela’s Simón Bolívar Orchestra, the Deutsche Kammerakademie, the Prague Opera, and the Arditti Quartet.
She also served as the artistic director of the Bellas Artes Opera and taught singing at the Universidad Panamericana’s School of Fine Arts.

In 2023, Ambriz was awarded the prestigious Bellas Artes Medal in Music, the highest distinction from INBAL.
Through her voice as Belle, Ambriz also touched plenty of Disney fans, and through her operatic career, she left her mark on the world stage.
