Everything You Need to Know About Security Screenings in Disney World
When I tell people that one of my favorite things about Disney World is security…well, let’s just say they often find that surprising.
For many people, security screenings feel like an annoyance – something slowing them down and stressing them out before their big, magical Disney day.

Magic Kingdom
Honestly, I get it. When it comes to Disney World, the anticipation is REAL, and security is the last thing standing between you and that sweet Disney magic.

But the truth is, I actually love security.
For me, security guards are the unsung heroes of Disney World. Why? Because thanks to them, I know that once I’m inside those gates, I can relax just a bit knowing that my family and I are a little bit safer than we were before.

The reality is that we spend a lot of time in our “real lives” worrying about our safety. Whether we’re at Target, the grocery store, the library, or school, there’s always a little piece of us that’s wondering, somewhere in the back of our minds, “What if…?” and “What do I do if…?” And frankly, it’s exhausting.
I don’t know about you, but when I go on vacation, I want a break from the stressors of everyday life. Which is why I LOVE that Disney security is thorough and mindful and has my family’s best interests at heart.

When I feel safe, I feel at ease. And when I’m at ease, I have more fun! I’m more relaxed, more present with my kids, and more open to the magic of Disney.
Perhaps surprisingly to some, Disney World security checks don’t have to be a source of stress. With just a little thought and planning, you can breeze through security confidently and stress-free!

So, what do you need to know about security checks in Disney World? Let’s check it out!
Your Guide to a Stress-Free Security Check
Thanks to modern, contactless security scanners, security checks at Disney World are faster and more convenient than ever.

Still, if you’re hoping for a stress-free security check, there are some important things to know before you go:
Where to Expect Security Checks
You probably already know to expect security checks at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. But did you know that you’ll also go through security at Disney’s water parks, at certain points at Disney Springs, and at select Disney transportation stations?

EPCOT
Yup, that’s right!
If you’re boarding the monorail at the Ticket and Transportation Center, Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, or Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, you will go through security before you board the monorail.
You’ll also go through security along the walkway between Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Magic Kingdom.

Know What’s NOT Allowed Inside Disney Parks
This one may seem obvious, but be absolutely sure that you don’t have prohibited objects inside your bags or on your person.
Prohibited items include firearms, ammunition, knives, marijuana or other illegal substances, fireworks, alcoholic beverages, glass containers, drones, skateboards, scooters, selfie sticks, and SO MUCH more. For reference, you can check out Disney’s FULL LIST of prohibited items HERE.

If you’re considering trying to sneak one of these items into a Disney Park, do yourself a favor and don’t bother. Disney Security will find those prohibited items anyway, so read that list and check it twice!
Bring the RIGHT Stroller
In case you missed it, oversized strollers, wagons, and wagon-strollers are also prohibited at Disney Parks. Although exceptions can be made for individuals with certain medical conditions, these devices are generally forbidden.

Stroller Wagon
If you show up with a disallowed stroller, wagon, or cart, you are extremely likely to be turned away at the gate. And that’s probably a chance you won’t want to take.

Instead, ensure that you are bringing the correct type of stroller, and that it is no greater than 31″ (79 cm) in width and 52″ (132 cm) in length (in case you’re wondering, we’re partial to the City Mini Double Stroller).
Wear Appropriate Attire
Getting dressed for a Disney day can be TONS of fun — and it’s all too easy to get so caught up in the magic that you forget about the dress code.

I know, I know — dress codes are BORING. But in Disney World (as in most places), it’s important to wear appropriate attire.
No, that doesn’t mean skirts to your knees or no spaghetti straps — but it does mean wearing attire that’s safe, respectful, and that doesn’t detract from Disney World’s family-friendly atmosphere.

You may already know that children are allowed to wear costumes inside the Disney Parks. However, Disney unfortunately does not permit full-fledged costumes for adults.
As such, if you arrive in anything that could be construed as a full costume, you may be asked to change or leave.

If you want to dress up — but don’t want a fuss at security — skip the costume and try your hand at Disneybounding instead!

In addition, be aware that Disney prohibits inappropriate or offensive clothing, so be sure to leave clothing with profanity or vulgar imagery at home.
Know What’s in Your Park Bag
When it comes to security checks (in Disney World or elsewhere), organization can be the key to a stress-free and easy experience.
When you pack your park bags, start by ensuring that they’re free of prohibited items, and if possible, avoid packing items that are likely to set off the security scanner.

Loungefly
This can include eyeglass and sunglass cases, umbrellas, portable chargers, large metal water bottles, and even some battery-operated items like neck fans and water sprayers.

Of course, sometimes we really DO need to pack these items with us.
Fortunately, you can keep things stress-free at security just by staying organized! Try keeping metal items stored together in a separate organizer inside your park bag, or carrying the item through the sensor by hand so security officers can see it out in the open.

Unsurprisingly, the bottom line here is to pack light if you can, know what’s in your bag, and make an effort to keep yourself organized. You can thank me later!
Use the Correct Line
When you approach the entrance gates at a Disney World park, be sure to read the signage. As it turns out, signs aren’t just posted for no reason, and they’re a great source of knowledge!

So when you approach security, be sure to follow the signs and queue up in the appropriate line.
In Disney World, security uses two separate lines: one for strollers, ECVs, and wheelchairs, and one for everyone else.

If you’re traveling with a stroller, ONE adult should accompany the stroller through the stroller line. Any additional adults should queue up in the regular line, along with any kids who aren’t using the stroller.

In addition, be aware that smaller kids will generally not need to vacate the stroller. However, older kids may be asked to get out and walk through the regular line.
Remove Bags from Underneath the Stroller
While you’re generally fine to leave your small kids inside your stroller, you WILL need to remove any bags from the storage area underneath your stroller.

Personally, I find that it helps to keep my bags organized and to keep stray items to a minimum.
This way, it’s quick and easy to remove them from underneath the stroller, which keeps you (and the line behind you) moving!

If you’re traveling with another adult, consider sending your bags with them through the regular line while you push the stroller through the stroller line. This means fewer moving pieces for the person pushing the stroller, and thus, a stress-free and painless security check for all.
Be Prepared
If Scar got ONE thing right in The Lion King, it’s this: BE PREPARED. Sure, he didn’t exactly have Disney World security in mind when he sang this, but it’s good advice nevertheless.

Photo: Disney
Don’t wait until you’re next in line to get yourself and your family situated. Don’t be the person who gets up to the front of the line, only to start emptying the stroller and pulling things out of your bag.
Seriously, just don’t do it — you’ll only stress yourself out and irritate the people behind you.

Instead, make sure to prepare yourself and your bags while you’re still waiting in line. You’re stuck waiting anyway, so use your time wisely.
Follow Instructions and Cooperate with Security Personnel
This one should probably go without saying, but just in case: always follow instructions and cooperate with security personnel.

These hard-working Disney Cast Members are only doing their jobs, which is to keep you, your family, and other guests safe.
So if you’re asked to step aside for a bag check, please don’t argue. Pack your patience, stay calm, and remember to always be respectful and polite. Disney’s security officers are just people, after all, and they have your best interests in mind.

In the end, a Disney World security check doesn’t have to be stressful or time-consuming.
Just remember to familiarize yourself with Disney’s prohibited items list, always know what’s in your park bag, and most importantly, practice patience. Your security screening will be a positive experience (and a complete non-event) when you’re kind, cooperative, and respectful.
