Will the Latest Tropical Wave Affect Central Florida?
Hurricane Erin has passed, and Tropical Storm Fernand is long gone– now our attention is moving on to the next tropical disturbance.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is tracking a tropical wave in the far eastern Atlantic that could become the season’s next tropical depression or storm.
NHC Update
9/1 2pm EDT: A tropical wave over the far eastern Atlantic has a 50% chance of formation over the next 7 days as it moves westward to west-northwestward at around 15 mph across the tropical Atlantic.

As of Tuesday’s 8 a.m. update, the system was located south of the Cape Verde Islands and had disorganized showers and thunderstorms.
Forecasters said environmental conditions are favorable for development, and a tropical depression is likely to develop by the end of this week. The system is moving west to west-northwest at about 15 mph across the eastern and central Atlantic.

How will this impact central Florida and the Walt DIsney World area? It is too early to know whether the system will affect Florida or the U.S.
However, if the storm develops, it will become Tropical Storm Gabrielle, the seventh tropical cyclone of the season.

So far this year, only one storm has reached hurricane strength. Hurricane Erin briefly intensified to a Category 5 with 160 mph winds earlier this month, but thankfully did not make landfall.
2025 Hurricane Season
The updated NOAA forecast calls for 13–18 named storms this season, with five to nine becoming hurricanes and up to five of those reaching major hurricane status. Hurricane season officially runs through November 30, with peak activity expected between September and October.
