‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Crosses A Major Box Office Milestone – Is the Film a Success?
It is no secret that 2025 has been a strange year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The year started with the release of Captain America: Brave New World. Despite a strong opening weekend, the fourth Captain America film was unable to overcome poor reviews and weak word of mouth.

The film concluded its run with a total of $415.1 million.
Up next for Marvel was Thunderbolts*, which was lauded by critics and fans alike.

Despite many calling it the best Marvel film in years, Thunderbolts* was bereft of the MCU’s biggest stars and ended its box office run grossing $383 million.
Enter Fantastic Four
Finally, there is The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Easily the most-anticipated Marvel film of the year, Fantastic Four saw Marvel’s First Family finally enter the MCU.

Despite lofty expectations, First Steps has had a muted box office run. Nevertheless, the film has now reached a significant milestone.
After six weeks in theaters, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has now surpassed the $500 million threshold and exceeded the total gross of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Additionally, the film is the highest-grossing superhero film of 2025 across Latin America, Italy, and Thailand.
What Does Success Look Like?
The question for Marvel is what constitutes a success in a post-Endgame world.
While the studio has been defined by billion-dollar films and cinematic events, before Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, a $500 million debut film for a franchise would have been seen as a success.

Now, many are scoffing at the number.
Rebuilding From the Ground Up
When analyzing the recent Marvel films, it is essential to remember that they are essentially establishing new franchises.

The hope for Marvel, and fans alike, should be that the new films tell great stories and make fans care about the characters.
From there, franchises like The Fantastic Four can grow into box office behemoths.

Looking at the 2025 releases, it is clear that Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four hit that mark.
So, before critics write the MCU’s eulogy, they should remember that Kevin Feige and his team are largely building new franchises.,

In my opinion, reports of the MCU’s demise have been overstated.
