Disney’s Live-Action Remake of ‘The Aristocats’ Has Been Canceled
Once upon a time, not so very long ago, Disney was able to print money with their live-action remakes of beloved animated films.
After the studio’s success remaking Cinderella and The Jungle Book, it was off to the races.

From 2017 through 2019, Disney’s remakes of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King dominated the box office, providing Disney with yet another lucrative line of films.
The Wheels Come Off
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the results of Disney’s live-action remakes have been mixed.

When Sean Bailey exited as President of Production at Walt Disney Pictures, the prevailing notion was that Disney would reel back its remakes.
To that end, we saw remakes, including Bambi and The Sword in the Stone, canceled.

Now, we can add another project to that list.
‘The Aristocats’ Has Been Canceled
In a new interview on Score: The Podcast, Questlove confirmed that his live-action remake of The Aristocats is not happening.

Initially announced in 2022, the live-action Aristocats was put into production under Bailey’s administration.
According to Questlove, the changes in Disney leadership derailed the project.

“A new administration came in, and then I was like, ‘Okay, well, this is what I plan to do, and dadada, do the song and dance, and here’s some of the music examples and there’s some team I’m working with dadada’,” he recalled.
“And then they had another administration shuffle, and it was like, “Okay well. All right.” And by the third time I was just like, “Maybe this isn’t meant for me, because there’s also, at least, like right now, there’s so much options I have in pickings.”

While it sounds like Questlove has moved on from The Aristocrats, he is not closing the door altogether.
“I mean, I would have loved to have done that project, but there’s like 20 others that I can get to […] there’s literally four other films. I’ll be working till, you know, 2029, 2030. So, just wasn’t meant to happen. Maybe it’ll happen in the future.”

Hope Springs Eternal
In the aftermath of Snow White’s implosion at the box office earlier this year, Disney seemed ready to pull back from live-action remakes, pausing production on a Tangled film.
Then, Lilo & Stitch dominated theaters. While the studio is still moving ahead with a live-action Moana and recently announced a Lilo & Stitch 2, it remains to be seen how dedicated they are to the genre.

Should they find renewed success with live-action remakes, it is possible that we could see The Aristocats (and other canceled productions) come to life after all.
