National Hurricane Center Tracks Two Potential Tropical Systems
The National Hurricane Center is watching two developing systems in the Atlantic while Hurricane Erin shifts into an extratropical cyclone.
NHC Update
Hurricane season is here, and we’ve got our eyes on new developing systems.

As of Friday’s 5 a.m. advisory, Erin was about 435 miles north of Bermuda with 90 mph winds and holding Category 1 hurricane strength. However, the hurricane didn’t make landfall, and all watches and warnings have since been dropped.
Now attention turns to two other tropical waves. The more likely to develop is located just north of the Leeward Islands, following Erin’s path.

The NHC gives it an 80% chance of forming into a depression or storm within two days and 90% within a week.
A second wave is about halfway between Africa and the Windward Islands, with a 40% chance of developing over two days and 50% within the next week. There is a third system near the Azores that has weakened and is no longer expected to develop.

If either system strengthens, it will be named Tropical Storm Fernand, followed by Gabrielle and Humberto on the 2025 list.
The updated NOAA forecast calls for 13–18 named storms this season, with five to nine becoming hurricanes and up to five of those reaching major hurricane status. Hurricane season officially runs through November 30, with peak activity expected between September and October.
