PHOTOS: The Magic Kingdom’s Rivers of America Is Now Completely Drained
One of the most significant changes in Magic Kingdom history unfolded before our eyes earlier this summer, when Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America closed to make way for Piston Peak, a new Cars-themed area coming to Frontierland.
For 50 years, the Rivers of America served as the heart of the Magic Kingdom, setting the scene for Frontierland and Liberty Square, while also transporting guests to a simpler time.

Previously, we wrote extensively about the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island, paying tribute to the area that brought joy to so many.
Now, it is time to look ahead!
The Rivers of America Has Been Drained
When visiting Magic Kingdom today, we noticed that the Rivers of America have now been completely drained.

In what is sure to be a strange sight for many guests, the area between Tom Sawyer Island and the rest of Magic Kingdom is now just a dry ditch.

Interestingly, we can now get a really good view of the Liberty Square Riverboat track.

Here is another look.

Seeing the dock to Tom Sawyer Island without water is surreal.

The Magic Kingdom’s birds are capitalizing on this opportunity.

Here is one final look.

When Will Piston Peak Open?
Eventually, the Rivers of America area will be filled in to facilitate the creation of Piston Peak.
At this time, Disney has not announced a target opening date for the new Cars-themed land. Hopefully, however, we will learn more soon!
