What began in 2005 with The Lightning Thief has grown into a global franchise spanning seven bestselling novels, two spin-off series, a Broadway musical, feature films, and the award-winning Disney+ adaptation. And fans are ready for more!

Author Rick Riordan, who is also the co-creator and executive producer of the Disney+ series, took time to sit down with Disney and reflect on these books and the character!
He shares everything from the enduring appeal of Percy’s adventures to his long relationship with Disney Publishing and the future of the franchise.

Riordan ultimately credits the timelessness of Greek mythology for much of the saga’s impact. Stories of love, loyalty, revenge, and family continue to resonate with new generations, and Percy’s modern-day adventures give those themes a fresh voice.
He also credits his background as a teacher, saying his years in the classroom shaped his ability to make ancient myths accessible and entertaining for young readers.
The Future
Percy fans want more, and looking ahead, can expect more books and more screen adventures.

Riordan even teased his next project, The Court of the Dead, coauthored with Marc Oshiro. The story is a follow-up to The Sun and the Starm and follows Nico di Angelo, a character from Percy Jackson’s world and son of Hades.
The Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians returns for its second season on December 10 with a fresh, cinematic take on The Sea of Monsters.
