A New ‘Disney Twisted Tale’ Imagines What Would Have Happened Had Moana Failed in Her Mission
Since Moana was introduced to the world, setting out on a harrowing adventure to save her people, the young Wayfinder has captivated audiences in a way few other characters have.
Moana’s original journey saw her throw caution to the wind and sail away from the world she knew to reunite the goddess Te Fiti with her heart. In the end, the curse on her island home was broken, and Moana proved herself to be a hero.

Now, however, Disney is asking the question, what if the Wayfinder failed?!

In this alternate version of the Moana story, Native Hawaiian author Keala Kendalle explores what would have happened had Moana failed to reunite the heart of Te Fiti with its proper owner.
After Maui and Moana lose the battle with Te Ka, the wayfinder must regroup and set out on a new mission to save her island.

“After a devastating battle with Te Kā, Moana’s worst fears are realized. The heart of Te Fiti is in ruins, Maui is frozen in volcanic rock, and darkness threatens to envelop her beloved home. Desperate to fix things, Moana stumbles upon an island already crumbling under the blight. All life is gone, save one sole survivor—a young woman named Noe,” the book’s synopsis reads.

“Moana is relieved to find another wayfarer, even if this stranger is more than a little intimidating. Better still, Noe has an idea how to fix the heart. They will use the tears of Te Fiti, gems infused with the goddess’s essence. The catch? The tears are said to be scattered throughout the realm of monsters.”
The Book Will Hit Shelves on September 2
