UPDATE: Florida’s East Coast on Alert as Tropical Storm Erin Strengthens
The kids are back in school, and hurricane season has officially started. Over the last few days, MickeyBlog has been monitoring Tropical Storm Erin and watching as it strengthens into a potential hurricane.
Will it impact central Florida or your vacation plans? Here is the afternoon update for Wednesday, August 13th.
Tropical Storm Erin

Tropical Storm Erin continues to track westward across the Atlantic and is expected to become the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season by Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Maximum sustained winds remain near 45 mph, with gradual strengthening that is anticipated to start on Thursday.

The system is projected to pass north of the northern Lesser Antilles this weekend, bringing the risk of tropical storm conditions and dangerous waves to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
Areas in the Lesser Antilles, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda are closely monitoring updates, as the track and intensity may still shift.

Current models suggest Erin will turn north as it approaches the Bahamas, keeping its center well east of Florida. At this time, there is likely no impact on central Florida.
Large swells and hazardous rip currents are expected along Florida’s east coast early next week.
Storms
Erin is the fifth named storm of the season and the first expected to reach hurricane status.
Hurricane Season
Peak hurricane season runs from mid-August through October, and we are just heading in. What can we expect? NOAA now predicts 13–18 named storms this year, with up to five major hurricanes possible.
