Disney Headlines for August 5th, 2025
This past week, Disney made a football deal, a ferryboat crashed, and turtles roamed the land.
I love the stories in the latest batch of Disney Headlines.
Red Zone Is Go

Walt Disney Company
By the time you read this, The Walt Disney Company may have announced its latest huge acquisition.
CEO Bob Iger has developed a reputation over the years for being a wizard when it comes to buying companies.

Sure, there were some misfires like Maker Studios, but they’re small potatoes compared to the blockbusters.
Disney has added Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars under Iger, and he joined as part of the ABC/ESPN purchase.

So, Iger’s roots go back to the explosive growth era of ESPN, which must make the past few years a bit tough.
To many, ESPN has lost its way as cable heads toward its dying breath, effectively replaced by streaming.

ESPN
That’s why ESPN’s upcoming pivot is so crucial to Disney, with the cable channel having lost 35 percent of its subscribers since 2011.
ESPN needs its impending streaming service, not-so-cleverly named ESPN, to excel.

Otherwise, the Worldwide Leader in Sports is in jeopardy of becoming a relic of the past.
Well, Disney just stacked the deck with a VERY clever deal. ESPN will acquire the NFL’s media holdings.

ESPN
We’re awaiting specifics as I type this and will probably get them within 24 hours of Disney’s Wednesday earnings call.
What we know for sure is that Disney will gain access to NFL Red Zone, and that’s the endgame here.
How Red Zone Helps

Walt Disney Company
While the deal won’t execute in time for the 2025 NFL season, it should be ready for 2026.
And that means Disney will have an ace in the hole when it heads into ESPN’s second football season as a streaming service.

With NFL Red Zone, fans can watch football drives taking place within the 20-yard line.
Basically, Red Zone shows every NFL touchdown of the year as they happen. It’s incredibly addictive.

NFL
We watch Red Zone religiously throughout the season, and it’s a masterstroke for ESPN to add this service.
Even better, Disney can add Red Zone as part of its ESPN cable package as well.

ESPN
While most of us have moved past the cable era, 65 million people still watch ESPN that way.
Those folks will soon gain Red Zone as part of this deal as well, which is essential to Disney.

Now, Disney can strong-arm cable companies in future carriage fees negotiations.
That’s because ESPN just gained more NFL broadcast rights with this deal, and it’s got Red Zone, too.

NFL
So, the remaining cable vendors will have little choice but to give Disney what it wants during future negotiations.
This aspect alone justifies Disney’s modest financial outlay in acquiring the best parts of NFL Media.

Disney/Comcast/Hulu
Even better, Disney is using money it had banked in case the Comcast/Hulu negotiations went south.
Therefore, this deal borders on free for Disney and ESPN from an accounting perspective.
The Boat Crash

I’ll lead with the fact that I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more, and I mean that.
I’ve been involved in three car accidents in my life, and driving a boat is that much harder.

Magic Kingdom Entrance
Keeping that in mind, here’s what we know about the Magic Kingdom ferry crash on July 30th.
The General Joe Potter ferryboat experienced an accident during one of its standard sailings.

This particular boat transports guests between Magic Kingdom and the Transportation & Ticket Center.
So, odds are good that you’ve ridden on the Joe Potter, even if you didn’t know the name of the ship.

We don’t know the specifics of the incident, but reports from the scene, such as this one, paint a picture.
For whatever reason, the Joe Potter hit the dock substantially harder than usual.

This incident occurred during an attempted docking at the Transportation & Ticket Center.
I’m thankful for that, as it would have been worse at Magic Kingdom, where there are more people.

The Orange County Fire Rescue Department and Osceola County Fire Rescue & EMS teams were first responders.
These professionals acted in unison with the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Fire Department.

Fox 35’s reporters attained photos of firefighters “wheeling medical supplies and a gurney onto the General Joe Potter.”
Witnesses noted several people sitting in wheelchairs, although that could easily be a precautionary move.

The contact between the boat and dock was reportedly hard enough to knock a baby stroller upside down.
A guest also claimed that “we crashed into something and we all went flying forward, falling.”

The incident occurred late on a rainy night, which may have contributed. If we learn more, we’ll let you know.
The Turtles Return!

Photo: Disney
Disney’s Vero Beach Resort is currently hosting one of my favorite hotel events of the year.
Yes, the 18th annual Tour de Turtles is here, and Ariel and Moana really have their work cut out for them.

Photo: Disney
This year’s princess turtles must overcome defending champion, Ebb, and other turtles to win.
For my money, the most dangerous turtle in the tournament is always Megan Thee Turtle, and yes, she’s real.

Disney celebrates the turtle nesting grounds near Vero Beach each year, and they chose fun names for the tracking turtles.
Conservation experts have tagged Ariel, a green sea turtle, and Moana, a loggerhead sea turtle, as this year’s stars.

Photo: Disney
The tags allow Disney to run a race of sorts, tracking which turtle travels the farthest during the three-month event.
Ebb, last year’s champion, traveled more than 1,100 miles during the Tour de Turtles!

This lil guy was also the first Disney-sponsored turtle ever to win the race.
So, there’s a lot of pressure on Ariel and Moana. Thankfully, they’re sea-based princesses.

Photo: Disney
I’m expecting big things from them, especially Moana, who is based on an ocean explorer.
That has to give her a leg up in the Tour de Turtles, right? Well, check back in three months.
That’s when we’ll learn how far she’s gone.
