After a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake (the sixth-strongest ever recorded) was registered just off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, a Tsunami Watch has been issued for the entire West Coast of the United States, including Los Angeles County.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake was recorded 78 miles east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia. Subsequently, a Tsunami Warning was issued for parts of Alaska, while a Tsunami Watch was put in place for the West Coast, from Alaska through British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and finally California.
Additionally, a Tsunami Watch has been issued for the entire state of Hawaii. There, waves could arrive as early as 7:17 PM, Hawaii Standard Time.

“This is a significant, real event,” Reid Wolcott, a meteorologist with the weather service in Seattle, told USA Today. “The imminent threat is for Alaska and areas near the quake. The National Tsunami Warning Center needs additional observation information before more is known about the threat to the US West Coast.”
When the Waves Could Hit
At this time, only residents of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands have been told to evacuate. The rest of the West Coast has been advised to prepare to take action and await further information.

“Tsunami watches are an advance notice to areas that could be impacted by a tsunami at a later time,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration explains. “Watch areas may be upgraded to a warning or advisory status, or canceled, based on new information.”
According to the National Tsunami Warning Center, if a tsunami does materialize, waves would reach Monterey at 12:15 AM, San Francisco at 12:40 AM, and Los Angeles Harbor at 1:05 AM.

“As more information comes in, we will either see this become a Warning, an Advisory, or an Information Statement,” the National Weather Service said on X. “Stay tuned for updates.”
