Disney Is Reportedly Developing a Remake of ‘The Black Hole’
Since the launch of Disney+ in 2019, Disney has continually drawn on its extensive library of films to create new content. Initially, the company’s goal was to attract as many viewers as possible to its new platform.
To that end, we saw revivals of cult-classic films including The Mighty Ducks, Willow, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
While Disney has shifted its streaming strategy and is no longer hyper-focused on subscriber count, the studio has continued to invest in long-dormant franchises to create new content.

For example, over the next four months, we will see Tron: Ares and Freakier Friday hit theaters. Additionally, work is continuing on a remake of Flight of the Navigator, and the company has reboots of Scrubs, Prison Break, and Malcom in the Middle in development.

What’s old has suddenly become new again.
‘The Black Hole’
Against this backdrop, insider DanielRPK is reporting that Edgar Wright is in talks with Disney to direct a remake of 1979’s The Black Hole.

Set in the distant future, the film tells the story of the USS Palomino crew, who are on their way back to Earth when they discover the long-missing USS Cygnus. After Palomino scientist Kate McCrae learns that the Cygnus is the same ship that her father had served on, the crew prepares to board the vessel.
Onboard, they meet the seemingly inside Dr. Reindhardt and his faceless army, who plan to be the first people to explore a black hole.
At the time that The Black Hole was released, it was the most expensive film ever made by Disney. It was also the studio’s first PG film.

While not a box office hit, The Black Hole would eventually be viewed as a cult classic among science fiction fans.
Another Remake Attempt
According to the latest reports, Wright will direct the remake and co-write the screenplay with Joe Cornish.
Interestingly, this is not the first time that a Black Hole remake has been in the works.

In 2009, director Joseph Kosinski was reportedly set to direct a remake of the film, with Jon Spaihts eventually signing on to write the screenplay. After years of development, the film would never see the light of day.

Hopefully, Wright is more successful.
