Things Look Bleak For ‘Elio’ After $10.7 Million Second Weekend
Coming off of their historic release of Inside Out 2, Pixar returned to theaters earlier this month with the long-awaited Elio.
An original Pixar film, Elio tells the story of an eleven-year-old boy who is enamored with space.
“The cosmic misadventure introduces Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession. So, when he’s beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide, Elio’s all in for the epic undertaking,” the film’s synopsis reads.

“Mistakenly identified as Earth’s ambassador to the rest of the universe, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions, and somehow discover who and where he is truly meant to be.”
A Disappointing Opening
After a series of delays, Elio finally hit theaters on June 21. Unfortunately, the film delivered the worst opening in Pixar history, scrapping up a measly $21 million at the domestic box office.

Despite the poor opening, there were some positive signs for Elio. For starters, the film was lauded by critics and fans alike, delivering an 84% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore.
Additionally, there was a dearth of family films on the immediate calendar. The hope was that Elio would leverage its strong word-of-mouth and have the kind of extended box office run that made Elemental a success.

Unfortunately, it does not look like that will be the case.
The Film Is in Trouble
In Elio‘s second weekend in theaters, the film managed to make just $10.7 million in domestic theaters. While a 49% drop week-over-week would be solid for a movie with a stronger opening, for Elio, that number won’t cut it.

Based on its trajectory, it would take a miracle to save the film. When you factor in Elio‘s astronomical budget, it is clear that the film has little chance of reaching profitability.

Unfortunately for Pixar and fans of original films, audiences simply didn’t turn out for Elio.
