Scarlett Johansson Provides an Update on Her Tower of Terror Film
Once upon a time, not so very long ago, Disney and Scarlett Johansson were at odds over the release of Black Widow.
With the world shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney decided to release Johansson’s Marvel blockbuster to Disney+ simultaneously. The contention between the two parties centered on Johansson’s contract, which included bonuses based on the film’s box office return.

Disney’s unilateral decision to release Black Widow to streaming torpedoed the film’s box office prospects.
The Johansson/Disney Feud
After months of working behind the scenes to get Disney to make good on the millions of dollars that Johansson lost out on when Disney released Black Widow on streaming, the actress got nowhere. Finally, Johansson sued Disney.
In response to the lawsuit, Disney, under the leadership of Bob Chapek, released a scathing statement attacking Johnsson for her “callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

It was a shocking public attack from Disney on a star who had not only appeared in eight Marvel movies but was also a fan of the Disney brand.

Eventually, Bob Chapek was ousted from Disney, and Johansson and the company made amends.
‘Tower of Terror’
In fact, the two sides have been working on a Tower of Terror film.

Tower of Terror
Initially unveiled in November 2021, the movie is expected to be written by Josh Cooley and directed by Taika Waititi.
“It is based off the ride. Now that the writer’s strike is also over, we’re finally able to, like, dive back into polishing up this script. So, yeah, it’s a massive, huge undertaking. I’m a huge Disney fan,” Johansson explained in November 2023.

The Latest on the Film

“It’s a hard nut to crack. Harder than you think, because the ride itself, there’s some lore to it, but it’s… I don’t want to say thin, but it is, kind of!” Johansson explained.
“That’s part of the mystery of the ride. It’s been a fun project to work on, because it’s a blue sky project. It has also proved to be a hard nut to crack. But, we’ll crack the case of it. It’s taking shape!”

Tower of Terror
While it doesn’t sound like Tower of Terror is hitting theaters anytime soon, it is great to hear the film is still in development.
Hopefully, we will learn more soon.
