‘Elio’ Crashes at the International Box Office — Can Pixar’s Latest Film Recover?
Earlier this morning, we reported that Pixar’s Elio was struggling in domestic theaters and tracking toward a $22 million debut. Unfortunately, that number gave the film the dubious distinction of having the worst domestic opening in Pixar history.
Now that the weekend has passed, we are finally getting Elio‘s international numbers. Unfortunately, they are bleak.
By the time Elio‘s opening weekend drew to a close, the film had grossed just $14 million overseas. That number trails Elemental‘s $14.9 million as the worst international opening Pixar has ever had.

Globally, the film grossed just $36 million this weekend.
While Elio certainly has its work cut out for it, its long-term prognosis is still unclear. Obviously, the film did not deliver the kind of opening that Pixar was hoping for.
The Good News
On the other hand, the audience who have seen Elio loved it. Currently, the movie holds an A CinemaScore rating.

The hope for Pixar is that Elio will follow Elemental‘s blueprint and turn its strong reviews and positive word of mouth into an extended box office run. For those who don’t remember, the latter film overcame its dismal opening to record a $500 million box office cume.
Also working in favor of Elio is a lack of competition from other family films.

While numerous films will be released over the next several weeks, Elio should have the family market cornered until Smurfs hits theaters on July 18.
An Uncertain Future
At this point, Elio has a lot to overcome before reaching profitability. However, it may be too early to declare that the sky is falling.
