We Finally Have an Update on Disney’s ‘Flight of the Navigator’ Reboot

When Disney entered the streaming world with the launch of Disney+ in 2019, the company began mining its library of films to create new content. With the goal of bringing as many viewers as possible to its new streaming service, the company spent billions.

To that end, we have seen revivals of cult-classic films including The Mighty Ducks, Willow, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

With Bob Iger’s return to Disney’s helm, however, the company has changed its streaming strategy, focusing on profitability, not subscriber count. This change has clouded the fate of many previously announced projects, including Disney’s Flight of the Navigator reboot.

‘Flight of the Navigator’

For those who don’t know, Flight of the Navigator is a sci-fi adventure film about 12-year-old David Freeman, who vanished without a trace in 1978 while walking through the woods. When he suddenly reappears in 1986, he hasn’t aged a day and has no recollection of the time he was gone.

Around the same time, NASA recovers a crashed UFO. David feels an inexplicable connection to the spacecraft, which soon links with his mind, revealing that it had taken him on a journey across the galaxy at faster-than-light speeds.

Since the film’s release in 1986, Flight of the Navigator has cultivated a cult following.

In 2021, Disney announced that Bryce Dallas Howard would reboot the franchise for a new feature film. Since then, however, updates on the project have been few and far between.

Until now.

Colin Trevorrow Provides an Update

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Colin Trevorrow, who attempted his own Flight of the Navigator remake in 2009, discussed Howard’s continuing work on the project.

“I saw every draft that she’s been working on as she’s been looking to crack it,” he said.

As the director explained, Flight of the Navigator continues to hold a special place in his heart.

“If you were born at a certain moment, it’s one of those ones that you have a fascination with. As a kid, the idea that all of your friends and family have aged while you’re still a kid, it’s just the absolute worst nightmare. So, yes, we’ve definitely connected on it,” he said.

While Trevorrow did not give any specific details on the progress of the new Flight of the Navigator, it is good to hear the project is still in the works.
