Mark Hamill Says George Lucas Never Considered Killing Star Wars’ Main Characters
The most controversial creative decision in the Star Wars sequel trilogy was undoubtedly Lucasfilm’s decision to kill off Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi.
For Star Wars fans who grew up idolizing Luke, the character’s portrayal as a whole, specifically in The Last Jedi, was off-putting and disappointing. His sacrificial death, then, was particularly upsetting.
After The Last Jedi hit theaters, Mark Hamill made it clear that he disagreed with Lucasfilm’s treatment of Luke.

Now, he is once again speaking up.
Mark Hamill Weighs In
In a recent interview with TODAY, Hamill revealed that George Lucas never considered killing off any of the franchise’s main characters. As Star Wars fans surely remember, Disney opted to off Han Solo in The Force Awakens, Luke in The Last Jedi, and Leia in The Rise of Skywalker.
“When I would complain about things – in the third one, I said, ‘Luke has lost his hand, he’s got the black glove, shouldn’t it be about Luke struggling with turning to the dark side?’ George said, ‘Mark, it’s for children,'” Hammil recalled. “And that’s why he would never consider killing any of the main characters. In the new ones, they pop us off one at a time.”

One of the biggest fan complaints about the sequels was their treatment of the original trilogy heroes, and the fact that we never saw Luke, Leia, and Han together again.
The Debate Will Rage On
Hamill’s assertion that Lucas never would have killed off the trio will likely add fire to the legions of fans who have continued to criticize the sequel trilogy.
As for Hamill, he recently announced that he would not return to Star Wars again. Instead, he wants the franchise to focus on its newer stars.
