AMC Has Finally Announced a Premiere Date For Disney’s Scrapped ‘Nautilus’ Series
Amid Disney’s drastic 2023 change in streaming strategy, the company dumped its Nautilus series before the show made it to Disney+.
Originally commissioned by Disney in 2021, Nautilus is a prequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, giving audiences a glimpse into Captain Nemo’s origin story.
“Nautilus follows Nemo’s (Shazad Latif) mission to enact revenge on the East India Mercantile Company, who took everything from him. He audaciously steals a prototype submarine from the penal colony in which he is imprisoned, escaping into the ocean with a motley crew of fellow prisoners,” the show’s synopsis reads.

“Nemo plans to reach the fabled Viking treasure buried at the Pillars of Halvar. But first, he must win the trust of his crew and keep out of the clutches of the ruthless East India Mercantile Company, who will do whatever it takes to stop him.”
A Victim of Changing Times
When Bob Iger returned to the helm of The Walt Disney Company in November 2022, he made it clear that Disney was changing its streaming strategy and cutting costs.

After years of spending billions of dollars on new content to drive customers to Disney+, Disney’s goal shifted to profitability.
To that end, numerous titles were removed from the Disney+ library, while other shows were canceled.

What made Nautilus unique, however, was that production on the series had already concluded. Disney simply decided not to add it to the Disney+ library.
AMC Saved the Show
While it looked like Nautilus may never be seen again, fans were thrown a lifeline when AMC announced that it had acquired the series in October 2023.

Since then, however, updates on the show have been non-existent.
Well, it is my pleasure to report that Nautilus will premiere Sunday, June 29, at 9 PM ET on AMC and AMC+. New episodes of the series will then air on Sunday nights.
