Walt Disney’s 70th Anniversary Esplanade Decoration Received a Makeover!
The Disneyland Resort 70th Celebration kicks off on May 16th, and the resort is working hard to get everything ready.
They re-opened “it’s a small world” today, finished one of the event’s largest decoration installations, started celebration previews (which we’re attending so be sure to follow along), and revealed the anniversary-inspired updates to a rootin’ tootin’ attraction.
But that’s not all–a 70th anniversary decoration’s nod to Walt Disney had to get a makeover before the event could begin. Let’s check it out!
Walt Disney Decoration Makeover
The esplanade’s 50-foot sculpture, inspired by Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, is finally complete!

We’ve been following the sculpture’s progress, and a few days ago, we–along with many others–noticed a confusing design choice. You see–the castle sculpture is adorned with golden silhouette charms that represent Disneyland’s five original lands.

There are charms for Frontierland…
…Fantasyland and Tomorrowland…
…Adventureland…
…and Main Street, U.S.A.
Now, we understand the silhouette for Main Street is supposed to be the Partners statue. However, we don’t remember Walt’s hair looking like that….in fact…we think his hair reminds us of another prominent figure. (Who do you think he looks like?)
Well, Walt’s hair stirred up quite the discussion after the charm debuted on the sculpture. So much so that Disney took the charm down, gave Walt a “haircut,” and reinstalled the charm.
