PHOTOS: Work Continues on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Refurbishment
Over the last several years, Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland has undergone what will eventually be a complete transformation.
Beginning with the 2023 closure of Splash Mountain, the park’s Wild West land has been radically changed. First, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure altered the fundamental setting of Frontierland. Then, the Country Bear Jamboree and Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade, which were opening-day Magic Kingdom attractions, were closed. Finally, Disney announced its plans to demolish the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island.
By the time the dust has settled on Disney’s plans, only Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will remain. The question is, will Disney also make major changes to the fan-favorite roller coaster?
Thunder Mountain Closed For Refurbishment in January
If you have been reading along here at MickeyBlog, you know that Thunder Mountain closed on January 6 for what is expected to be a year-long refurbishment.
While Disney has not announced what the renovations will entail, the hope has been that Magic Kingdom will finally get the dynamite finale that other versions of Big Thunder Mountain have.

When we last checked in on the project, new track installation had begun. Now, we are back with another update.
The Latest From Frontierland
When visiting Magic Kingdom today, we were thrilled to see that Disney is continuing to refurbish Tumbleweed, the Old West town that riders pass by on Thunder Mountain.
As you can see, the construction is extensive, with large steel structures erected throughout the scene.
Here is another look.
There is scaffolding everywhere!
From a different vantage point, the refurbishment is clearly taking place throughout the attraction, with equipment and materials visible throughout.
Even the ride’s lift hill was being worked on.
When Will Thunder Mountain Reopen?
At this time, it is not clear when Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen at Magic Kingdom. The hope, however, is that the trains will be running again early next year.
