We Now Know When ‘Shogun’ Season 2 Will Begin Filming
Looking back on 2024, there was no bigger show on streaming than Shogun.
Based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell, the series follows “the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds, John Blackthorne, a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance.”

Originally envisioned as a mini-series, the FX production quickly took the world by storm, dominating the ratings and racking up a record number of awards. By the time the dust had settled on the show’s initial run, Shogun held a 99% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was FX’s most-watched show ever.

Eventually, the series would also shatter the record for most Emmys.
Disney Announced Two More Shogun Seasons Last Year
As previously noted, Shogun was originally conceived as a limited mini-series. After the show’s historic success, however, Disney quickly pivoted.
In May 2025, the company announced that FX, Hulu, and the James Clavell Estate were working to develop two additional seasons of Shogun.
