Now, he is shifting gears and turning his focus to artificial intelligence to help make the movie magic more sustainable.
The Future of Film-Making
In a recent interview on the Boz to the Future podcast, Cameron shared his thoughts on the future of blockbuster films like Avatar.

He explained that high production costs could put the genre at risk. His solution? He is looking at the benefits of using AI to enhance visual effects and cut costs—not to replace artists but to make their jobs faster and more efficient.
Cameron shared, “It’s not about laying off the staff. It’s about doubling their speed so they can move on to the next cool thing.”

James Cameron
Cameron, who recently joined the board of Stability AI (the company behind Stable Diffusion), emphasized that AI should be a tool, not a storyteller.
“In the old days, I would have founded a company to figure it out. I’ve learned maybe that’s not the best way to do it. So I thought, all right, I’ll join the board of a good, competitive company that’s got a good track record,” Cameron said.
Cameron’s goal was to understand the developers’ space and minds, including their targets and development cycles, and determine how to integrate this into a VFX workflow.
He firmly believes that only human writers can craft emotionally rich screenplays that impact audiences looking at AI as a potential tool, not a replacement.
A New Approach
This approach to technology is perfect as Cameron finishes post-production on Avatar: Fire & Ash, the highly anticipated sequel set to release December 19 from Disney and 20th Century Studios.
As we progress in the world of acting and movies, it is clear that James Cameron isn’t just about making movies—he’s reimagining how they’re made.
