MickeyBlog was invited to cover this meaningful story this morning in an exclusive backstage area at Kilimanjaro Safaris.
The debut of an endangered Masai giraffe calf, a momentous event, took place on the Harambe Wildlife Reserve, offering a unique perspective not previously accessible to media. Witnessing Mara and Tucker exploring the savanna today was truly heartwarming.
The Importance of Tucker’s Birth
The birth of Tucker stands as a remarkable milestone for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The Masai giraffe, deemed endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), faces a challenging reality with only about 30,000 of these majestic creatures left worldwide.
Habitat loss and poaching loom as critical threats to their existence, prompting Disney’s dedicated efforts to safeguard this iconic species.

“Tucker’s birth is really important for us. It’s a testament to Disney’s leadership in animal care and conservation and our incredible partnership with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the Species Survival Plan. This plan focuses on maintaining genetic diversity of the giraffe population and helping to prevent giraffes from becoming extinct,” said Dr. Mark Penning, Vice President of Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment.
Tucker Stands Tall for Conservation
Celebrating a milestone during Earth Month, the Disney Conservation Fund (DCF) marks its 30th anniversary.
Established in 1995, the fund has contributed over $132 million to community conservation programs. This support aids respected organizations in safeguarding wildlife, fostering community engagement, and enhancing environmental resilience.

“Through DCF grants to local and global nonprofit organizations and the expertise of Disney Conservation cast members driving both scientific research and on-the-ground action, Disney helps protect endangered species, restore habitats, empower the next generation of conservation leaders, and address environmental challenges worldwide,” said Claire Martin, Senior Manager of Biodiversity Conservation, Environmental Sustainability at The Walt Disney Company.

Over the upcoming weeks, guests will have the opportunity to witness Tucker’s growth and development. From taking those first wobbly steps to forming a special bond with its mom and discovering the world around it, it’s sure to be a journey filled with wonder and discovery.

Disney’s dedicated team of animal care experts and veterinarians are diligently overseeing every step of Tucker’s progress. Disney is committed to ensuring the well-being and happiness of this precious addition to their animal family.
