Disney Is Poised to Lose Over $100 Million on ‘Snow White’
After a disastrous second weekend in theaters, any hope of Snow White reaching profitability has gone out the window.
As a quick recap, the live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs hit theaters on March 21 amid a firestorm of controversy. Between Disney’s handling of the film’s iconic dwarfs and multiple comments made by Rachel Zegler, it was clear that Snow White had its work cut out for it in theaters.

Eventually, the film delivered a disappointing opening weekend, grossing $43 million domestically and $44 million overseas. While an $87 million opening would be good news for most films, Snow White’s $270 million budget necessitated a stronger opening.
The Wheels Fall Off
After Snow White’s debut, the conversation quickly turned to the film’s long-term box office prospects. Between the bad PR surrounding the movie and middling critical reviews, it was fairly evident that the film was in trouble.
Neverthless, hope springs eternal, and some observers wondered if the film’s family audiance would still turn out.

Unfortunately for Disney, Snow White had a disastrous second weekend. The film’s fate is seemingly now sealed. The only question is how much money Disney will lose.
Disney Stands to Lose $115 Million on ‘Snow White’
According to a new report from Deadline, Snow White is heading towards an estimated loss of $115 million. That number assumes the film will take in $225 million at the box office and factors in home video, TV, and Disney+ income.

Breaking it down, Deadline estimates that Snow White will make $101 million in film rentals, $62 million in home entertainment, $130 million in streaming and TV revenue, and $2 million from merchandise.
The Bottom Line
Calculating a film’s return for a studio is a difficult proposition, especially when the movie is released by a synergetic machine like Disney. Whether Disney loses $75 million or $115 million is largely inconsequential.

In the end, the bottom line for Snow White is now clear. The film will bomb, and Disney will not only have lost millions of dollars but also squandered an opportunity to adapt one of its most beloved films.

In this case, there will be no happily ever after.
