Pixar CCO Pete Docter Teases That ‘Toy Story 5’ May “Surprise” Fans
At last year’s D23: The Ultimate Fan Event, Pixar Chief Creative Officer (CCO) Pete Docter took the stage in Anaheim and announced that Toy Story 5 was officially in development.
Needless to say, fans were excited.
While Pixar has largely kept the upcoming film’s plot under wraps, we know that Woody will somehow be reunited with Buzz, Jessie, Bullseye, and the rest of Bonnie’s toys to face off against their greatest challenge yet—technology.

“Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the gang’s jobs get exponentially harder when they go head to head with an all-new threat to playtime: technology,” the film’s synopsis reads.
Andrew Stanton Will Direct the Film
To bring the next Toy Story adventure to life, Pixar turned to Andrew Stanton, who has been involved with the franchise from the very beginning. As the studio celebrates 30 years of Toy Story, Docter, Stanton, and their team are ready to introduce the franchise’s iconic characters to a new generation.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Docter discussed audiences’ expectations for the fifth Toy Story film. According to CCO, Andrew Stanton will do some things in Toy Story 5 that may surprise people.
“I think films have definitely sped up. Even Toy Story 1 to Toy Story 4, the level of visual sophistication, including the pacing, we’re just trying to keep in touch with the rhythms of the world and it’s definitely faster. So I will say Toy Story 5, I think [writer and director] Andrew’s done a really great job of letting moments breathe in unexpected ways,” Docter explained.
“Things that [make you think], Wait, is this a Toy Story movie?, with some of his choices, which I think we need at this point. We’ve had four of ’em already. We got to keep people surprised, so it’s going to be fun.”
A Film For Kids and Adults Alike
According to Docter, Pixar’s goal with Toy Story 5 is to create a film that will appeal to both adults who grew up with the franchise and kids who may be experiencing their first Toy Story film.
That goal has permeated every installment in the franchise.

“That was important to us at the time when Toy Story came out, there wasn’t a lot of films that did that. There were a lot of ’em that were like four kids and nothing really other than maybe from Japan or something for adults,” Docter reflected.
“And so our goal was to, in the same way [Steven] Spielberg did with Indiana Jones and Star Wars with George Lucas, we’d love to bring animation into something that we as 20-, 30-year olds can enjoy.”
‘Toy Story 5’ Will Hit Theaters Next Year
Even as Toy Story celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, the franchise is showing no signs of slowing down. Whenever it seems like Buzz and Woody’s story has come to an end, the toys reunite for more movie magic.

Pixar will look to keep the franchise’s pristine record intact when Toy Story 5 hits theaters next summer.
