Disney’s ‘Snow White’ Delivers $3.5 Million in Thursday Previews
After years of development, a 12-month delay, and plenty of controversies, Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White has finally opened in theaters.
Starring Rachel Zegler, Gal Gadot, and Andrew Burnap, the film is a modern retelling of Disney’s beloved animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
“In the heart of a dark forest, the lovely young princess Snow White seeks sanctuary in a quaint cottage belonging to seven dwarfs, escaping the wrath of her envious stepmother, the wicked Queen,” the film’s synopsis reads.

For the sake of my sanity, we are not going to rehash Snow White’s tumultuous production, which saw the film consistently in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Instead, I want to focus on its box office performance.
Snow White’s Thursday Hall
Arriving in theaters yesterday afternoon, Snow White delivered $3.5 million in previews.
While it is still too early to tell how the film will fair this weekend, Snow White did manage to top both Maleficent: Mistress of Evil ($2.3 million) and Dumbo ($15.2 million). Basically, Snow White‘s start has been acceptable.

The problem facing Disney is that its latest live-action remake carries a $270 million budget. In order to reach profitability, the film will have to exceed its current box office projections and have an extended run in theaters.
Prior to this week, the prevailing hope was that glowing critical reviews would entice audiences to see Snow White and that strong word of mouth would keep the momentum going.

Unfortunately, as we previously reported, critical reviews for Snow White have not been great.
Holding Out Hope
In the end, it is hard to imagine a world in which Snow White can overcome its numerous controversies and middling critical reviews and turn a profit for Disney.

Still, hope springs eternal. Perhaps audiences will take to Snow White, as they did Elemental, and the film will be a rousing success. For now, however, things look bleak.
