The First ‘Snow White’ Reviews Have Landed on Rotten Tomatoes
After numerous delays and plenty of controversy, Disney’s Snow White live-action remake is finally set to hit theaters this weekend.
Starring Rachel Zegler, Gal Gadot, and Andrew Burnap, the film promises to be a modern retelling of Disney’s beloved animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
“In the heart of a dark forest, the lovely young princess Snow White seeks sanctuary in a quaint cottage belonging to seven dwarfs, escaping the wrath of her envious stepmother, the wicked Queen,” the film’s synopsis reads.

‘Snow White’ Is Tracking Toward a Soft Opening
As we previously reported, Snow White is currently tracking toward a $45-$50 million opening domestically and a $55 million debut abroad. That would give the film a $100 million opening weekend.
For a film with a $200 million budget, Disney was likely hoping for a better debut. Nevertheless, the early buzz surrounding Snow White has been largely positive following its Hollywood premiere. With that in mind, it seemed possible that the film could benefit from strong word of mouth and perhaps have the kind of extended box office run that made Mufasa: The Lion King and Elemental profitable.

Unfortunately, the glimmer of hope surrounding Snow White has quickly faded. Now that the review embargo on the film has been lifted, sentiment is much more mixed than we previously thought.
What the Critics Are Saying
As of this writing, Snow White holds a 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 87 critic reviews.
That number puts the film behind 2019’s The Lion King (51%) and just ahead of Dumbo (46%) as far as Disney live-action remakes go.

The problem for Snow White is that unlike The Lion King or Aladdin, which also received middling critical reviews, the film is heading towards a weak opening weekend. Bereft of strong word of mouth, it is hard to see how Snow White can reach profitability.
It should be noted, however, that fan reviews have obviously not yet been tabulated. It is then possible that Snow White will connect with its target audience in a way that it did not with the critics at large.

We will know more when the film hits theaters on March 21.
