‘Moana 2’ Delivered the Best Disney+ Streaming Debut Since ‘Encanto’
After dominating the global box office on its way to grossing over $1 billion, Moana 2 kept its momentum going after arriving on streaming last week.
The highly-anticipated sequel to 2016’s Moana garnered 27.3 million views in its first five days on Disney+. That marked the biggest Walt Disney Animation Studios premiere since 2021’s Encanto and the third-large animated theatrical premiere of all time on Disney+.
Set three years after the first Moana film, the sequel finds the young Wayfinder reuniting with Maui and heading out to reconnect with the people of Oceania.

“Before Maui stole Te Fiti’s heart, our ancestors wanted to connect our island to all the people of the entire ocean. It’s my job as a Wayfinder to finish what they started,” she explains in the film.
‘Moana 2’ Was a Box Office Triumph
Released to theaters on November 27, 2024, Moana 2 set numerous box office records, including the best Thanksgiving Day ever, the best Black Friday of all time, and the second-highest-grossing day at domestic theaters in 2024.
Eventually, the film would also claim the title for best five-day release of the year.

It should be no surprise, then, that Moana 2 made quite the splash when it debuted on Disney+.
The Original ‘Moana’ Continues to Reign Supreme on Streaming
Since the launch of Disney+ in 2019, the original Moana film has consistently ranked among the top films on streaming. Buoyed by the release of Moana 2, the first Moana film has now surpassed 1.4 billion hours streamed or 775 million views.
Additionally, Disney announced that 2024 marked Moana‘s most-streamed year ever!
