“Our team at PepsiCo Design & Innovation collaborated with Walt Disney Imagineering Paris to create a bold new female character: the owner of Overland Trail Cafe. We gave her a captivating narrative as a stagecoach driver that seamlessly fits into Frontierland’s Western Time Era, establishing the Overland Trail Cafe as the trading post for the legendary Doritos Loaded at Disneyland Paris. Guests will see our design influence as the adventurous culinary story unfolds at the Overland Trail Cafe,” explained Shiri Kornowski, Senior Design Director at PepsiCo.
Overland Trail Cafe’s New Backstory
According to a new backstory for Overland Trail Cafe, the owner of the eatery is a stagecoach mail carrier with a fiery nature and a curious mind.

During one of her trips along the frontier, she met a gold prospector who shared his meal with her — a simple but delicious snack of crispy, triangular corn chips.
She stocked up on the crisps but, during her travels, she inadvertently mixed them up with other goods she was carrying. Ultimately, this was a blessing in disguise when she discovered that the combined flavors were delicious! Thus, the Doritos Loaded recipes were created, and she began selling them to the inhabitants of Thunder Mesa.

The new character was inspired by real-life Western heroes such as Mary Fields, Annie Oakley, and Calamity Jane. Imagineers were also inspired by the 19th-century dime novels featuring female heroines.
The Story Is Told Through Decorative Elements
As part of the new story, several decorative elements have been added to the exterior and interior of Overland Trail Cafe.
For example, outside the eatery, guests will find a large wooden billboard map illustrating the stagecoach driver’s travels, a dime novel cover featuring her adventures, and nods to the Thunder Mesa Express.

Inside the Overland Trail Cafe, guests can find photos of the owner with the inhabitants of Thunder Mesa. Look closely, and you can spot Ol’ Klondike, the famous gold prospector who introduced her to Doritos!
“We took great care in weaving our new character’s story into the rich mythology of Frontierland. As a larger-than-life trailblazer, she fits right into the colorful cast of characters who inhabit Thunder Mesa,” David Goebel, Lead Concept Designer at Walt Disney Imagineering Paris explained. “And as always, it was a true joy collaborating with the many talented artisans, craftspeople, and experts of all kinds who work behind the scenes at Disneyland Paris.”
