PHOTO: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Track Installation Has Begun at Magic Kingdom
If you have been reading along here at MickeyBlog, you know that we have been closely following the major refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom.
As a quick recap, the attraction closed on January 6, 2025, for what is expected to be a year-long renovation. While Disney has yet to announce what the refurbishment will entail, the prevailing hope has been that the Magic Kingdom will finally get the Thunder Mountain dynamite finale that other versions of the attraction have.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed sign
Since Thunder Mountain closed, it has been evident that Disney is wasting no time on the construction project. Over the last couple of months, we have seen construction walls go up, track removal begin, and even the deconstruction of some of the attraction’s iconic props.
The Latest Update
When we visited Magic Kingdom today, we were thrilled to see that the installation of Thunder Mountain’s new track had begun.

As you can see, construction crews are hard at work.

In a testament to the scope of the refurbishment, construction workers can be seen in numerous spots throughout the attraction.

Right now, however, most of the work looks like it is taking place in Tumbleweed.

Here is the view from across the Rivers of America.

Here is one last look.

When Will the Attraction Reopen?
At this time, it is unclear when exactly Big Thunder Mountain will reopen. All we know is that the attraction will return next year.
Hopefully, we will learn more as the progress on the refurbishment continues.
