Hoping to Avoid Controversy, Disney Scales Back Its Plans For the ‘Snow White’ Premiere

With Snow White set to hit theaters in just a couple of weeks, Disney is scaling back its plans for the film’s Hollywood premiere.

According to a report from Variety, Snow White will still premiere with a special screening at the El Capitan Theatre, where stars Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot will be in attendance.

Unlike most premieres, however, Disney will not invite outside media outlets to the red carpet. Instead, the event will be limited to photographers and company media.

Snow White‘s Stars Have Cultivated Controversy

Disney’s decision to limit Snow White’s premiere likely relates to controversial comments made by the film’s stars. Both Zegler and Gadot have made statements that were seen as dismissive of the original animated Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

At the 2022 D23 Expo, Zegler noted that the original Snow White was “very evidently” a product of the 1930s.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Zegler called the original Snow White film “extremely dated” in its “ideas of women being in roles of power and what a woman is fit for in the world.”

“There’s a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her,” she said.

Calling the dynamic “weird,” Zegler explained that the new Snow White is “really not about the love story at all.” 

Then, there is the tension among Snow White’s stars over the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Gadot, who is Israeli, has been open in her support for the country. Zegler, meanwhile, has frequently posted “free Palestine” on social media.

Finally, Zegler found herself in hot water for her comments about President Trump. She subsequently apologized.

Disney’s Pivot

As the premiere of Snow White looms, all eyes will be on Zegler and Gadot. To their credit, both actresses have pivoted in recent months and have only had laudatory things to say about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
