‘Anora’ Triumphs at Academy Awards: Sean Baker Equals Walt Disney’s Record
Last night was the 97th Academy Awards, and the independent film “Anora” emerged as the night’s biggest winner.

The film won five Oscars, including Best Picture, and was an excellent night for director Sean Baker. The evening matched a record set by Walt Disney over seven decades ago.

Sean Baker is known in Hollywood for his authentic storytelling and focus on marginalized communities. He made history by winning four Oscars in a single evening: Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Picture.
This awesome accomplishment ties him with Walt Disney, who also won four Oscars in 1954.
The main difference? Baker won all of his Oscars for one film, while Disney won them for four different movies.
The Living Desert won Best Documentary Feature, The Alaskan Eskimo won Best Documentary—Short Subject, Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom won Best Short Subject—Cartoon, and Bear Country won Best Short Subject—Two-Reel.

It is unusual, but not completely unheard of, for a director to edit their own film. Baker has extensive work in the independent film industry and also produces his own movies.
‘Anora’
“Anora” tells the story of Ani, a young Uzbek-American stripper from Brighton Beach, New York, who becomes romantically involved with Ivan Zakharov, the son of a Russian oligarch.
Their fast romance leads to a marriage that faces challenges when Ivan’s parents intervene.

Premiering at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2024, “Anora” received critical acclaim and won the prestigious Palme d’Or.
The film was released theatrically on October 18, 2024, grossing $41 million worldwide.
