‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Will End Its Box Office Run at $700 Million
While the current king of the box office is Captain America: Brave New World, Mufasa: The Lion King has now reached a major theatrical milestone.
The last time we checked in on The Lion King prequel’s box office performance, Mufasa had reached a global total of $671.1 million. As we previously discussed, Mufasa needed to end its box office run with a gross of at least $500 million to turn a profit.

That number seemed almost insurmountable when the film stumbled out of the gate and was trounced by Sonic the Hedgehog 3 over its first weekend.
‘Mufasa’s’ Comeback Story
Since its disappointing debut weekend, however, Mufasa has come roaring back. The film delivered the kind of extended box office run that Disney was surely hoping for and has now officially crossed the $700 million threshold.

Breaking that number down, Mufasa has made roughly $247 million at domestic theaters and $453 million overseas. Last weekend, its tenth in theaters, the film added another $4.4 million to its cume.
That number was particularly impressive as Mufasa has already been released on digital platforms.

According to Deadline, the film’s best offshore markets have been France ($43 million), UK ($40.3 million), Germany ($31.9 million), Mexico ($30.9 million) and Italy ($23.6 million).
It’s Great To Be King
After a near-disastrous start, Mufasa: The Lion King was a roaring success for Disney. As the film ends its box office run, the Lion King prequel can take pride in its comeback story. Once again, the future of the franchise looks bright.
