‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Soars to a $40 Million Opening Day; Could Cross $100 Over the 4-Day Weekend
Captain America: Brave New World got off to a soaring start at the box office yesterday, delivering a $40 million debut.
As the first installment in the Captain America franchise to star Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson instead of Chris Evans’s Steve Rogers, Brave New World is flying in uncharted territory.

A Great Opening Day For ‘Brave New World’.
Despite middling reviews, Brave New World is heading for a 4-day opening between $95 and $109 million. Going into the weekend, the film was not expected to cross the $100 million threshold.
In addition to beating expectations, Friday’s $40 million debut for Brave New World gives the film the second-best opening in franchise history. The film bested Captain America: The First Avenger ($27.5 million) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($36.9 million) but landed behind Captain America: Civil War ($75.5 million).

Now that it looks like Captain America: Brave New World will get off to a better-than-expected start, all eyes will turn to next weekend. With a budget north of $180 million, Brave New World will need to have an extended box office run to turn a profit.
Looking Ahead
The last Marvel film to hit theaters on Presidents’ Day weekend was 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which got off to a strong start ($106 million) before falling off a cliff. That film ended its box office run with a gross of $214.5 million at domestic theaters and lost Disney money.
With a distinct lack of competition on the horizon, Brave New World should have some time to run up its numbers in theaters. The concern, however, is that audiences stay away due to the film’s middling reviews from critics (51% on Rotten Tomatoes) and viewers (B- on CinemaScore).
Hopefully, however, the allure of Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk, a bevy of returning Marvel stars, and Anthony Mackie’s Captain America will keep audiences coming back.
